Creating her latest album, "Guts," wasn't a walk in the park for Olivia Rodrigo. The singer, famous for her hit "Drivers License," recently opened up about her struggles with anxiety and self-doubt during the songwriting process for this new project in an interview with The Guardian.
Rodrigo revealed that unlike her 2021 debut album, "Sour," where inspiration flowed freely, she initially found it difficult to compose songs for "Guts." Her anxiety was fueled by the fear of matching or even surpassing the incredible success of "Sour."
"For several months, I would sit at the piano, and all I could think about was how I'd never create something as remarkable, or the harsh criticism I might face on Twitter, or how I couldn't measure up to... whoever," she shared honestly.
To overcome these challenges, Rodrigo decided to collaborate with her long-time partner, Dan Nigro, beginning their songwriting journey last August. Interestingly, they chose to stick to Nigro's garage studio rather than seeking out a new recording environment. Olivia explained, "Introducing a new studio would have only heightened my anxiety and self-doubt. I'd have thought, 'Oh my God, we're spending thousands of dollars, and I don't feel like I'm creating anything worthwhile.' It's the opposite of fostering creativity." She even admitted that on certain days, she would enter Dan's studio only to find herself in tears.
Nevertheless, the duo decided to bring in fresh co-writers to infuse new perspectives into their creative process, and Olivia, at the age of 20, also aimed to learn from other musicians. One pivotal piece of advice came from Jack White, who encouraged her to write songs that she genuinely wanted to hear on the radio. This simple yet profound guidance ignited her creative spark.
"I was going through such a challenging period, but strangely, when I read that advice, I thought, 'Oh my God! That's precisely what I need to do,'" Rodrigo fondly recalled.
Despite the initial hurdles, "Guts" was released on Friday, showcasing Olivia Rodrigo's resilience and creative evolution.
